Paraprofessionals known as teacher assistants, work alongside certified teachers to perform teacher-related work. These assistants are not licensed to teach but play an important supporting role that provides assistance in classrooms and other educational settings.
Paraprofessionals, also referred to as assistants or aide, assist teachers and help students academically.
A paraprofessional’s job is to serve as an assistant helping with the learning process in a number of ways. They work in public or private school helping with classroom activities or provide one-on-one assistance to students and also help teachers by preparing lessons or grading homework.
Paraprofessionals often help to implement behavior management strategies if a student has a behavior intervention plan, an assistant will record the student’s behavior and report the information back to the main teacher.
They may help disability students in participating with classroom activities, going to the washroom, or walking them to their classroom.
Other responsibilities may include setting equipment, work in small groups to reinforce lessons, help teachers prepare lessons, enforce school rules, monitor classroom and supervise students between classes.
Patience
Work with students who have a disability or learning issue requires patience. Assistants need to understand and have sympathy to help students who may face challenge in the class.
Flexibility
Paraprofessionals need to be flexible in handling the needs of students because each learning environment are unpredictable. Flexibility enable paraprofessional to support students and teachers in any way they need help.
Communication
Good communication skills are important for being able to send information effectively to students, teachers, and parents as you actively listen and respond with understanding.
Collaboration
Collaboration is an important skill because paraprofessionals work as part of a team to support teachers, share responsibilities, collaborate with teachers to manage student behavior. Working with individual students as assistant contributes to working in a positive, group environment.
Problem-Solving
Paraprofessionals face many challenges which is why having the ability to do problem-solving is important during unexpected situation and the ability to adapt to a situation.
