About This Course

Course Idea: “Does Money Lead to a Happier Life?”

1. Key Perspectives

  1. Child / Young Adult – asks basic, curious questions about money and happiness.

  2. Parent / Family Member – shares personal experiences with finances and well-being.

  3. Economist / Psychologist / Expert – explains research and theory on money and happiness.

  4. Elder / Societal Perspective – adds cultural, social, and long-term viewpoint.

2. Sample Debate Script

Child: “Mom, does having more money make people happier?”

Parent: “Money can make life easier by providing food, shelter, education, and health care. But it doesn’t automatically make you happy. Relationships, purpose, and balance matter too.”

Economist / Psychologist: “Research shows that money increases happiness only up to a point — enough to cover basic needs and reduce stress. Beyond that, other factors like meaningful work, social connections, and health become more important.”

Child: “So someone poor can be happy if they have friends and family?”

Parent: “Exactly. People with less money can still find joy through relationships, hobbies, community, and gratitude.”

Elder / Societal Perspective: “Society also matters. Communities with trust, fairness, and support systems tend to be happier overall, regardless of wealth.”

Economist / Psychologist: “Also, how people use money affects happiness. Spending on experiences, helping others, or personal growth often brings more lasting satisfaction than buying things.”

Child: “So happiness comes from a mix of money, relationships, and meaningful activities?”

Parent: “Yes. Money provides security, but happiness comes from balance, purpose, and connections with others.”
