2. Sample Debate Script

Child: “Grandma, why is it so hard for farmers to grow food these days?”

Farmer / Family Member: “It’s getting more difficult because of unpredictable weather, poor soil, and lack of resources like seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. Prices for supplies are rising, and markets are unstable.”

Agriculture Expert: “Yes, climate change, deforestation, water scarcity, and limited access to technology make farming very challenging. Small farmers often cannot afford modern irrigation, storage facilities, or crop insurance.”

Child: “So people can’t feed their families or earn enough money?”

Farmer / Family Member: “Exactly. Some families go hungry or have to sell their land. Children may have to stop school to help on the farm.”

Community / Elder Perspective: “When farmers struggle, the whole community suffers. Food scarcity raises prices, nutrition declines, and the local economy weakens. It’s a cycle that keeps poor communities trapped in poverty.”

Agriculture Expert: “Solutions exist, though. Communities can adopt sustainable farming techniques, use drought-resistant crops, access microloans or subsidies, and implement cooperative farming programs to share resources. Governments and NGOs can provide training, equipment, and market support.”

Child: “So with the right help, farming can still work even in difficult places?”

Farmer / Family Member: “Yes. It requires planning, support, and sometimes innovation, but communities can thrive if solutions are applied thoughtfully.”
